A new Covid-19 variant, identified as XEC, is emerging in multiple countries after first being detected in Germany in June.
Cases have since surfaced in the UK, US, Denmark, and other nations, raising concerns about its potential to become the dominant strain this fall.
The XEC variant features new mutations that may aid its spread, though vaccines, while not specifically targeting this strain, are expected to continue offering protection against severe illness.
Symptoms are similar to previous strains, including a high temperature, aches, tiredness, and a cough or sore throat.
Covid data analyst Mike Honey noted, on X, “strong growth” of XEC in Denmark and Germany, though reduced routine testing makes tracking its spread difficult.
