The Port of Alicante in Spain has ramped up its operations with Morocco since the launch of the Alicante-Casablanca shipping route in June 2023, according to Todo Alicante, an Iberian news outlet.
Recent data shows a 25% increase in activity on this route in 2024 compared to the latter half of 2023.
Operated by Maghreb Container International (MCI Spain), the route is served by the vessel Greta, which completes the journey in 48 hours. The Greta departs Alicante on Wednesdays and arrives in Casablanca on Fridays, with a brief stop in Huelva.
The versatility of the Greta is a key advantage, allowing it to transport a variety of container types, including dry, refrigerated, and specialized containers for palletized goods, Todo Alicante reports.
Top exports from Alicante include seafood products, both frozen and refrigerated, and processed construction materials. The route also frequently handles regional goods such as toys, textiles, footwear, and nougat.
The Alicante Port Authority aims to surpass last year’s record passenger numbers in 2024 and 2025. This year, the port is expected to handle 95 stopovers and approximately 215,000 passengers. Next year, projections include 107 stopovers and over 250,000 passengers.
As of April 2024, passenger numbers have already risen by 30% compared to 2023, contributing an estimated €60 million to the local economy.
