A recent study by the nonpartisan American think tank Pew Center examined religious practices in 102 countries from 2008 to 2023 and found Morocco to be the most religiously observant nation in North Africa, with early 90% of Moroccans prioritizing religion in their lives and over 70% pray daily.
The broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region also demonstrates high levels of religiosity, with Palestine, Jordan, and Iraq following Morocco in terms of religious importance. Morocco ranks fourth in daily prayer rates behind Iraq, Jordan, and Palestine. Indonesia, however, surpasses all with a 95% daily prayer rate.
Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the MENA region exhibit the highest overall religiosity, with countries like Senegal, Tanzania, and Guatemala reporting over 90% of adults prioritizing religion.
In contrast, European nations like Estonia, Switzerland, and the UK display significantly lower levels of religious importance.
While prayer frequency offers insights into religious practice, the study notes that many East Asians hold religious or spiritual beliefs without prioritizing prayer or considering religion highly important.
