Smoking is responsible for 8% of deaths in Morocco, Minister of Health Khaled Ait Taleb reported, noting that lung cancer is responsible for 75% of the fatalities.
“Morocco is not an exception to this epidemic,” Ait Taleb noted, adding that “the tobacco consumption rate is 23.4% among men and 0.3% among women, according to the 2018 National Survey on Risk Factors for Non-Communicable Diseases.”
The minister also reported that smoking rates have declined among students aged 13 to 15, dropping from 9% in 2010 to 6% in 2017, and among adults aged 18 and older, from 16% in 2008 to 13.4% in 2017.
