The 17th Congress of the Africa Prosecutors Association (APA) is a new beginning to the cooperation between African public prosecutors’ offices, Prosecutor General of the King at the Court of Cassation, Head of the Public Prosecution Office El Hassan Daki said on Wednesday in Marrakech.
The APA’s 17th Congress is an opportunity to strengthen communication links, to reinforce exchanges and sharing ideas and experiences between presidents of African public ministries, to examine a range of issues relating to the action of public ministries, and to highlight the achievements of the APA during this mandate, added Daki in a statement to the press following the Association’s General Assembly.
This meeting, he continued, is also an opportunity to set the course for closer cooperation between African countries so as to tackle various aspects of crime.
He further said it is an ideal framework for opening up new prospects for cooperation, promoting ongoing training and ensuring that experiences are shared between African countries.
Referring to the election of a new management structure for the APA, Daki stressed that “we hope this will breathe new life into the action of public ministries across the continent”.
For his part, the APA’s new President, Kenyan Renson Ingonga, expressed his firm willingness to work tirelessly to ensure the Association’s adeencement towards higher objectives.
He also welcomed establishing a permanent APA headquarters in Morocco, noting that this decision should improve the services provided by the Association.
For his part, APA outgoing president Mohamed Chaouki stressed the importance of judicial cooperation between African countries to combat cross-border crime, particularly human trafficking and cybercrime.
The APA provides a legal framework for bringing together African prosecutors and providing training for public prosecutors in Africa, said Chaouki, adding that APA meetings will undoubtedly have a positive impact on pan-African cooperation, not only in the judicial field but beyond.
Morocco was elected to head the APA Secretariat General at its General Assembly held on Wednesday in Marrakech.
The APA Executive Committee also approved the establishment of the APA’s permanent headquarters in Morocco.
Furthermore, the APA presidency has been entrusted for a renewable two-year term to Kenya following Egypt and the treasury has been entrusted to Zambia.
