Moroccan YouTuber Adam Taoufiq, known as “New Battuta,” disappeared after announcing plans to visit the “Golden Triangle” in Myanmar, where Moroccans are reportedly detained.

Adam’s last contact was on May 23, when he informed his father, Tawfiq Hisham, that he was in Vietnam and heading to Laos.

Since then, communication has been lost, raising serious concerns as Adam had always maintained regular contact during his travels.

Amjad Rami, another Moroccan YouTuber who was with Adam in Vietnam, confirmed Adam’s intent to explore the Golden Triangle, a notoriously dangerous area where passports are often confiscated. Rami fears Adam may have been detained there.

The situation for Moroccans in Myanmar is alarming. Between 150 and 200 Moroccans are believed to be held in detention centers, facing torture and extortion by gangs demanding ransoms up to 100,000 dirhams.

In response, the King’s Attorney General at the Casablanca Court of Appeal has launched a judicial investigation into the criminal gangs operating in Myanmar’s border areas with Thailand. This follows testimonies from victims and their families.
