Morocco has boosted its fleet of Canadair aircraft to seven, in addition to using artificial intelligence, drones, and American satellites in preparation for wildfire season in the summer of 2024.
At a national directorate meeting for forest fire prevention and control held at the National Agency for Water and Forests headquarters in Rabat, a budget of MAD 153 million was revealed to tackle the increasing risk of forest fires this summer.
The funds will be allocated towards enhancing surveillance patrols for early detection, maintaining forest trails and firebreaks, establishing water points, and acquiring new vehicles for initial intervention.
The National Agency for Water and Forests reported 466 wildfires in the 2023 season, affecting approximately 6426 hectares of forested areas, with 35% of the burned areas comprising secondary grasses and seasonal plants.
Despite challenging climate conditions, Morocco recorded a 70% decrease in wildfires compared to 2022. However, the agency anticipates an increased risk of forest fires this season due to persistent drought and prolonged heatwaves.
