Ait Taleb answers to Parliament on mental health, emergency services and 'guarantee cheques'

Morocco’s healthcare sector is facing a number of major challenges that are hampering its efficiency and ability to meet the growing needs of the population.

These include the persistent shortage of doctors and health professionals, shortcomings in medical and hospital infrastructures, and the major challenge of extending medical coverage to the entire population.

These challenges are all the more pressing in a context where healthcare needs are evolving rapidly, notably as a result of increased urbanization and demographic ageing.

But one of the issues discussed in Parliament on Monday in the presence of the Minister of Health concerned mental health, emergency services and the guarantee cheques required by private clinics.

Regarding the challenges faced by mental health in Morocco, Khalid Ait Taleb, Minister of Health and Social Protection, said that this was an old and major problem, and that there was a bill on the subject which was withdrawn from Parliament because it did not conform to reality and had serious shortcomings.

Asked about the guarantee cheques imposed by private clinics on patients, despite their having health insurance, Ait Taleb stressed that we must find the reason why these clinics resort to guarantee cheques or “sums given in black”.

“We probably need to put an end to this. But we need the right formula to put an end to it. We agree on that. In addition, we have carried out a series of inspections, during which several sanctions were applied to certain clinics. We also need to understand the reasons behind this phenomenon. After the Covid-19 pandemic, it became clear that there was a disparity between the services provided and the price paid today”, he explained. he explained.

The Minister therefore felt that the issue of guarantee cheques had to be overcome. And to do so, he pointed out that “there are mechanisms we can discuss to protect at least the rights of the insured and those of the clinics too. Because if we close the clinics today, we’ll be undermining the healthcare supply”.
