The Moroccan football team, Nahdat Berkane, found themselves unexpectedly detained at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers on Friday morning. The reason was the team’s official orange jerseys,, which featured a map of the entire Kingdom of Morocco, including the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
According to sources, the players were subjected to what they describe as “unjustified” harassment upon arrival at the airport. The team had arrived on a direct flight from Oujda Angad Airport in Morocco, a journey that took approximately one hour.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between Morocco and Algeria, particularly regarding the Western Sahara issue. The territory has been a point of contention for decades, with Morocco claiming sovereignty and the Polisario Front seeking independence.
