The Kabyle independence movement is making a global push for recognition as they prepare to declare a “Kabyle State” in New York on April 20th.
Sources told Hespress that this international outreach campaign targets countries like Morocco, the Emirates, Libya, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, alongside France and Canada.
The Kabyle movement hopes to garner international support for their cause of establishing an independent Kabyle state.
Sources close to the Movement for the Autonomy of Kabylie (MAK) and the Kabyle Government in exile (ANAVAD) revealed their intensified diplomatic efforts to foreign ministries across North Africa, the Middle East, and even Western nations.
According to these sources, official messages sent by the movement reiterate their commitment to a unilateral declaration of Kabyle independence by the end of 2025 if the Algerian government fails to address the grievances of the Kabyle people.
“The official telegrams sent to these countries included, in addition to announcing the date of the declaration of the state’s birth at the end of this month, a confirmation of the movement’s determination to declare the independence of the tribes unilaterally by the end of next year, precisely before June 14,” sources told Hespress.
Earlier pronouncements by MAK cited their analysis of the current geopolitical climate and recent regional developments as the impetus for declaring a “Kabyle State.”
They have threatened to formally secede from Algeria if the Algerian authorities continue to neglect Kabyle demands.
These demands include the cessation of legal actions against Kabyle activists, both civil and political, and the release of all Kabyle detainees currently held in Algerian prisons.
Ferhat Meheni, leader of MAK and President of the provisional Kabyle government in exile, has openly expressed his hope for international recognition of the “Kabyle State,” particularly from Morocco.
Meheni has also indicated the movement’s desire to establish a representative office in the Moroccan capital Rabat, potentially including the southern provinces of the Kingdom.
The planned declaration of a “Kabyle State” signifies a pivotal moment for the Kabyle independence movement, as it brings to the forefront the aspirations of the Kabyle people to establish a self-governing, sovereign state.
While the success of this diplomatic campaign and the future of the “Kabyle State” declaration remain uncertain, it is evident that the Kabyle movement is seeking a global platform to amplify their voice and garner international support for their cause.
