Ferhat Mehenni, President of the Provisional Kabyle Government (Anavad) and the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylia (MAK) is set to announce the birth of the Kabylia state on April 20 in New York, USA, a substantial step towards Kabyle people’s freedom.

In a televised speech to the Kabyle people and the international community broadcasted on Monday, Mehenni appears to be counting on Morocco’s support for this move, stating, “We know that Morocco sympathizes with Kabylia, a sentiment echoed in 2015.”

He went on to express gratitude towards Morocco and King Mohammed VI for their repeated gestures of support, particularly regarding the Kabyle people’s right to self-determination. However, he pointed out that Morocco’s support has not shown any progress since 2015.

The president of MAK also expressed hope that Morocco-Kabylia relations continue to develop and grow stronger.

He promised that “the Kabyle people always bear the responsibility of their choices and will always respect those who have offered assistance, never becoming ungrateful towards our neighboring Morocco,” referring to Algerian leaders who turned their backs on Morocco as soon as their country gained independence in 1962, while Morocco has been financing separatism in the Sahara for nearly 50 years.

Mehenni highlighted that while it’s beneficial to strengthen relations, they can’t impose themselves or anything on Morocco, a sovereign state.

“The Kabyle people have an agenda worth of respect from their friends as well, just as King Mohammed VI mentioned regarding the Sahara issue. Supporting the right of the Kabyle people to self-determination is the lens through which we measure the value of our friends,” further explained the same speaker.

The president of MAK underscored the Kayble people’s commitment to peaceful means of achieving independence and “called for political and diplomatic support to counter Algerian interference.”

“None of us has warlike intentions. Our only desired warfare is that of spreading information and advocating for our right to determine our destiny,” he elaborated further.

He called upon all Kabyles to attend in large numbers to the city of New York on April 20th to participate in the declaration of the birth of their state.

For context, Moroccan diplomacy urged the international community on November 2, 2015, during the United Nations Third Committee proceedings, to bring forth the voices of eight million Kabyles who have long been kept silent and invisible.

He noted that the Kabyle people “must be supported so they can enjoy their legitimate rights to self-determination and autonomy.” This was in response to Algeria’s inclusion of the Sahrawi issue on the UN agenda.
