Moroccan football clubs have garnered over $32 million in profits from player transfers in the last five years, with $7.6 million recorded in 2023 alone, securing the top spot in the Arab region, according to the “Mercato Al Sharq 2023” report, which compiles data on player transfers across Arab nations.
The report notes that Tunisian, Algerian, Iraqi and Jordanian clubs also generated profits from player sales between 2019 and 2023. Meanwhile, Egyptian clubs reported profits only in 2022 and 2023.
Overall revenue from player sales for Arab clubs reached $220 million during the 2019-2023 period, with a significant uptick attributed to Saudi Arabia’s huge presence in the transfer market. Profits from player contracts abroad for these clubs surged by 41% in 2023, rising to $50.7 million compared to $36 million in 2022.
