Rabat mayor steps down amidst accusations and mounting pressure

Rabat’s mayor, Asmaa Rhlalou, announced today her resignation months after she spurred a crisis that questioned her legitimacy and authority within the City Council.

“Given the state of tension that the council has known in recent months, I ask you to accept my resignation to advance the interest of the residents of Rabat,” Rahlo wrote in her resignation letter submitted to the governor.

Most members accuse Rhlalou of  “being alone in managing and making decisions without referring to the council,” cumulating to when she decided to allocate 10 million dirhams from the council’s budget to the special fund for the Al Haouz earthquake without first obtaining the approval through a vote majority.

Rhlalou also faces accusations of raising taxes, imposing an illegal vehicle immobilization fee, and restricting press access to council meetings.

Advisors from her party, the National Rally of Liberals, and two other coalition parties voted to oppose her leadership, citing dissatisfaction with her management style and decision-making process. They blame her for “arrogance,” “intransigence,” and “improvised decisions” that neglect the needs of Rabat residents.

Rhlalou’s isolation deepened when advisors boycotted recent council meetings.
