Morocco considered ideal location for AFRICOM headquarters, US official

Robert Greenway, former Deputy Assistant to the US President and First Director of the Middle East and North Africa Affairs Department at the National Security Council, said on his Twitter account that Morocco would be an ideal location for the headquarters of AFRICOM.

The statement was made after US General Michael Langley, Commander of AFRICOM, visited Morocco last week, where he held discussions with several military officials.

This isn’t the first time demands to relocate AFRICOM’s headquarters from Stuttgart, Germany, to Morocco have surfaced.

US Senator Dan Sullivan emphasized before the Senate Army Committee last March the importance of Africa hosting the US command’s headquarters, citing Morocco as a trusted ally and a potential host due to its qualifications, particularly its security, stability, and strong relations with Washington.

In response, General Michael Langley affirmed that having AFRICOM’s headquarters in Africa would be advantageous, but he also noted the current location’s benefits due to its proximity to many partners.

The US Command in Africa became operational in October 2008, adding a new command to the existing US regional commands, akin to the US Command in Europe and the US Pacific Command.

This command facilitates regular maneuvers between the US Army and over 50 African countries, including the upcoming “African Lion” exercises hosted by Morocco from May 20 to May 30 this year.
