In a press release, the Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF) has denied reports circulating about the contract for the high-speed line (LGV) linking Marrakech to Agadir.

The Office thus refuted the “totally erroneous” information that the construction of the Marrakech-Agadir high-speed line was awarded to a Chinese company, relayed by certain media outlets.

The same source stressed that, as part of the prospective studies for the development of this rail line, ONCF had commissioned a Chinese company to carry out a preliminary study.

The contract for the study was awarded to the Chinese design firm CRDC (China Railway Design Corporation), but this does not mean that the project for the future rail network linking Marrakech to Agadir should be entrusted to a Chinese company, ONCF added.

In its clarification, ONCF also points out that the contract was awarded following an open international call for tenders in which several firms from around the world took part, and that the Chinese design firm emerged as the best bidder.

“Once the high-speed line project has been finalized and all the studies have been completed, a construction plan with all the components will be adopted. It will be the subject of appropriate and transparent communication”, noted ONCF.

As a reminder, the Marrakech Agadir HSL is one of the major projects that the ONCF and Morocco as a whole have embarked upon. Several countries are in the running to win the contract to build it, including France, Spain and China, among others.
