Foreign currency travel receipts surged to a historic high of 105 billion dirhams in 2023, marking a 12% increase from 2022, said the Ministry of Tourism.
“Following a record influx of 14.5 million tourists in 2023, foreign currency travel receipts have achieved an unprecedented milestone of 105 billion dirhams. This growth, reflecting a 12% rise over 2022, underscores the remarkable momentum within the tourism sector throughout 2023.”
Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, and the Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, highlighted, “The surpassing of the 100 billion dirham threshold in tourism revenues for 2023 reaffirms the sector’s pivotal role as a major foreign currency generator for our nation.”
Together with tourism revenue, a record 115 billion dirhams in remittances from Moroccans abroad played a crucial role in the inflow of hard currency to the country.
Morocco aims to amass 120 billion dirhams in hard currency by 2026, driven by expenditures of foreign visitors. The country plans to spend 6.1 billion dirhams up to 2026 to develop its tourism sector.
International tourism receipts encompass the spending of international visitors during their stay, covering payments to national carriers for international transportation and any subsequent expenditures for goods and services acquired within the destination country.
Half of the tourists who visited Morocco in 2023 are Moroccan expatriates, accounting for 51% of arrivals and recording a growth of 27% compared to 2022. In total, Morocco welcomed 14.5 million tourists last year.
Foreign tourists increased by 41% compared to 2022 and accounted for 49% of total arrivals, up 3 points from 2022.
