Atlas Lions captain Romain Saiss apologized to the Moroccan people following a surprising exit from the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16.
“We gave our all for you, for Morocco, but it was not enough to go all the way,” Saiss wrote in a statement on Instagram.
The Morocco defender promised a strong comeback and “to bounce back and bring back smiles and joy to the Moroccan people.”
The national team’s captain mentioned Achraf Hakimi, who missed a decisive penalty shot against South Africa on Tuesday.
“You’re a champion, my brother; nobody will blame you; only those who never shoot never miss,” Saiss said.
The Atlas Lion concluded by thanking teammate Amine Adli, who had lost his mother a few weeks before the AFCON kickoff, praising his “strength and character.”
