As the first snowfalls settle on mountain peaks, communities in rural and mountainous areas in Morocco are preparing for the arrival of cold weather, which heralds a period of concern and challenges.

In remote and mountainous regions of the country, winters can be merciless, endangering the lives and well-being of thousands of people.

To address this reality, the Moroccan government is rolling out a far-reaching preventive plan for the current winter season, 2023-2024.

Revealing the details of this initiative, Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit underlined the scale of the efforts being deployed to protect vulnerable communities.

With a total population estimated at almost 823,000, spread across 1,989 douars and under the territorial jurisdiction of 242 communes, the plan covers 20 regions of the kingdom.

As the first snowflakes settle on mountain peaks, part of the world is preparing to enthusiastically welcome the pleasures of winter, such as skiing and snowy getaways.

For some communities in Morocco, however, the arrival of cold weather heralds a period of concern and challenge.

In the country’s remote and mountainous regions, winters can be merciless, endangering the lives and well-being of thousands of people.

To address this reality, the Moroccan government is rolling out a major preventive plan for the current winter season, 2023-2024.

Revealing the details of this crucial initiative, Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit underlined the scale of the efforts being deployed to protect vulnerable communities.

With a total population estimated at nearly 823,000, spread across 1,989 douars and under the territorial jurisdiction of 242 communes, the plan covers 20 regions of the kingdom.

The unveiling of this strategy stems in part from a question posed by Nabil Dakhch of the Haraki (Popular Movement) group, highlighting the specific challenges faced by mountainous and remote areas, already tested by the earthquake on September 8.

In concrete terms, the national plan aims to assess the needs of targeted populations, focusing on the distribution of blankets and essential food products in areas at risk of isolation due to extreme weather conditions.

In terms of public health, proactive measures are being put in place to ensure continued access to medical care.

This includes the deployment of mobile units and medical caravans in the regions concerned, as well as the mobilization of medical and paramedical staff to reinforce medical care capacities, particularly for pregnant women and vulnerable populations.

The winter plan also pays special attention to the homeless, providing for their accommodation in social welfare institutions and facilitating emergency interventions in case of need.

As regards the supply of firewood, close collaboration between the Agence Nationale des Eaux et Forêts and the Ministries of Education and Health ensures the availability of this vital fuel, as well as the provision of stoves in targeted areas.

In addition, efforts are being made to raise awareness among displaced populations of the risks associated with winter weather conditions, and to provide them with material support where needed, in close coordination with the relevant ministries.

In a spirit of solidarity and commitment to citizens, the Minister of the Interior stressed the importance of mobilizing all resources and means necessary to guarantee the safety and protection of communities exposed to the rigors of winter.

These initiatives are in line with royal instructions to ensure the well-being of people living in mountainous and remote regions, particularly those affected by natural disasters such as the earthquake.
