Three whales were found dead on Moroccan shores in recent weeks, according to the National Institute of Fisheries Research.
Experts at the Institute are investigating the reasons behind the incidents in Boujdour, Dakhla, and Kenitra.
Initial findings relating to the whale that died in Kenitra suggest a potential disease, with ongoing scrutiny to identify the specific type.
Local authorities in Kenitra, as per the institute’s guidance, have taken measures to contain the large whale carcass to prevent potential transmission of viruses and infections.
A researcher at the Institute Iman Altaie told Hespress AR that initial on-site observations of the whale at Kenitra Beach indicate a weakened state of health, particularly evident in its skin condition. This suggests the possibility of a disease contributing to its demise.
A team of experts from the South Center in Casablanca and marine epidemiology specialists in Tangiers, affiliated with the institute, arrived at Chalihat Beach to further investigate the incident. Samples were collected from the whale’s carcass for analysis.
In the case of the whale in Dakhla, Al-Taie highlights the discovery of a fishing net, suggesting it may have caused the whale’s death or became entangled after its demise. Investigations continue, and a comprehensive report will reveal the definitive reasons for its death.
The National Institute for Research in Marine Fisheries said Morocco records an annual range of 120 to 170 whale deaths along the coast of the Kingdom.
