Spanish motorcyclist Carles Falcón, aged 45, has tragically passed away on Monday, succumbing to injuries sustained during a dramatic crash in the second stage of the Dakar Rally 2024. The announcement was made by his team, TwinTrail Racing Team, expressing profound sadness over the loss.
According to a statement released by the team, “On Monday, January 15, Carles left us. The medical team confirmed that the neurological injuries caused by the cardio-respiratory arrest during the accident are irreversible.”
The incident occurred more than a week ago, on January 7, during the intense rally, prompting Falcón’s emergency transfer to Riyadh Hospital. Despite immediate medical attention, he was repatriated to Spain, where it was revealed that he suffered from severe injuries, including a fracture of the C2 vertebra and cerebral edema, as conveyed by Twintrail’s communication manager, Carla Prat.
Carles Falcón, not just a seasoned rider but also an engineer by training and a motorcycle instructor, had taken on the challenging Dakar Rally in the “Original by Motul” category. Notably, this category requires participants to navigate the demanding course without any mechanical assistance, showcasing the true grit and skill of the competitors. Falcón carried the bib number 135 as he took on this formidable challenge.
Hailing from Tarragona in Catalonia, Falcón was a dedicated sportsman, actively involved in Trail biking. This year marked his second participation in the Dakar Rally, following his 68th place finish in 2022.
