The Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication organized a grand ceremony in Rabat on Sunday to mark the Amazigh New Year 2974, in the presence of the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch.

The ceremony, which took place at the Théâtre Mohammed V, was attended by members of the government, personalities from the world of politics, human rights and the media, representatives of diplomatic missions, and a large audience who came to celebrate a thousand-year-old tradition, deeply rooted in the national cultural heritage.

On this occasion, the audience watched a film retracing the milestones in the process of promoting Amazigh as an essential and integral part of the national identity.

This ceremony was punctuated by artistic and musical performances, brilliantly interpreted by figures of Amazigh music, both classical and modern, such as Raissa Fatima Tihihit, Kawtar Barani, Mimoune Rifi, Ahmed Soltane, Houssa 46 and Aicha Maya, in addition to authentic songs, dances and melodies drawn from popular Amazigh folklore.

In addition to the presentation of handicrafts reflecting the richness and diversity of Morocco’s Amazigh heritage, the ceremony was marked by a posthumous tribute to the myth of Amazigh song, Mohamed Rouicha.

The Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mahdi Bensaid, took the opportunity to point out that the Ministry had spared no effort to ensure a celebration worthy of the occasion, noting that the event was a recognition of the cultural role of Amazigh art in its various dimensions in the different regions of the Kingdom.

In a statement to the press, Bensaid noted that the festivities marking the Amazigh New Year illustrate once again the government’s commitment, in line with royal instructions, to give a strong impetus to the artistic and cultural sectors.

At the same time, he reiterated the determination of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication to continue working to consecrate the presence of Amazigh culture and preserve the Amazigh cultural heritage.

The celebration of the Amazigh New Year, which follows King Mohammed VI’s decision to establish this official paid national holiday, gave rise to a variety of activities, organized in several provinces of the Kingdom, an opportunity to revisit and celebrate the habits and customs linked to an important segment of the national cultural heritage.
