Revelations continue to come out in the case dubbed “Desert Escobar,” which implicates prominent Moroccan personalities in politics and sports to an infamous drug trafficking baron.
The public prosecutor at the Casablanca Court of Appeal announced on Sunday that, the investigating judge decided to place 20 people in prison, after preliminary interrogation, with one person subjected to judicial supervision, in a case related to international drug trafficking.
The same source added, in a statement received by Hespress, that “due to the complexity of these charges and the intertwining of their ramifications, the investigations have taken the necessary time, in full compliance with the relevant legal provisions and under the direct supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.”
The results of the investigations led to the appearance of 25 people before the Public Prosecutor, some of whom hold legal positions or responsibilities within local authorities or are responsible for law enforcement, in addition to others who committed acts related to the case.
“In keeping with the principle of equality before the law, the results of the investigations have led the Public Prosecutor’s Office to submit a request to the investigating judge to carry out investigations against them on suspicion of committing each of the acts of which they are legally accused, and which can be summed up as a set of crimes, including participation in an agreement to possess drugs, transport them, exporting and attempting to export them, corruption, forgery of official documents, direct exercise of physical and individual control to satisfy personal whims, obtaining documents under duress, facilitating the exit and entry of Moroccan citizens to and from Moroccan territory on a regular basis as part of a gang and agreement, and concealment of assets acquired by crime… ” reads the statement.
After their preliminary questioning, the examining magistrate decided to incarcerate twenty (20) of them and to subject one person to judicial control measures, while the Public Prosecutor’s Office instructed the specialized judicial police to continue investigations against the other four with the aim of clarifying certain aspects of this case. Once the investigations they have ordered have been completed, the Public Prosecutor’s Office will also take the necessary measures against them, says the same source.
Furthermore, as part of the right to information, the Public Prosecutor’s Office will continue to communicate the results of research and investigation procedures to the public once they have been completed, in strict compliance with legal requirements, in accordance with the rule of law and respect for the presumption of innocence.
