A UN source revealed that a military delegation led by Alexander Ivanko, head of the MINURSO mission and representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Sahara, and General Fakhr al-Ihsan, commander of the UN mission’s military forces arrived Tuesday evening in the Algerian capital.

The source, who spoke to the Hespress stated that “the UN mission delegation, which is visiting the region on a fact-finding mission, will hold in-depth bilateral discussions with senior Algerian officials, before heading towards the Tindouf camps in southwest Algeria to hold discussions with the leadership of the Polisario Front.”

The Hespress source reported that the meeting focused on the background of the recent attack that targeted residential neighborhoods in the Moroccan city of Smara on October 28, which claimed the life of a young civilian in his thirties and wounded 3 other citizens with varying injuries.

The source concluded by stressing that “the MINURSO mission, which also includes military and civilian figures affiliated with MINURSO, is in the process of preparing and drafting a comprehensive report for the mission on the attack.”

This visit comes after the representative of the United Nations MINURSO forces held a long meeting with the Moroccan authorities on November 6 in Rabat, to discuss the merits of the terrorist act that rocked the city of Smara.

Omar Hilal, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations, pointed out that “the silence of the Polisario leadership regarding the Smara events indicates its involvement in terrorist acts that targeted unarmed civilians,” stressing that “the matter will not go unpunished.”

The Public Prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Laayoune had previously announced in a report that the judicial police had been assigned to conduct an investigation.

The Attorney General at the Court of Appeal in Laayoune entrusted the investigation team with carrying out the necessary technical and ballistic expertise to uncover the source and nature of the explosive projectiles.

The same document concluded by emphasizing that the Attorney General at the Court of Appeal in Laayoune will ensure that the necessary legal effects are arranged in light of the results of the research.

Meanwhile, the Polisario representative in New York justified “the terrorist acts that targeted residential areas” by “the existence of a state of war with the Kingdom of Morocco,” since the liberation of the Guerguerat crossing in 2020.
