Jorf Lasfar was Morocco’s leading port for goods traffic with a volume of 34 million tonnes (MT) in 2022, down 3% compared to 2021, according to the Moroccan Ports Competitiveness Observatory (OCPM).
It was followed by the port of Casablanca (25.80 MT) and Agadir (6.52 MT), according to the 2022 report of the Observatory managed by the National Ports Agency (ANP).
Overall, port activity in 2022 was down 4.2%, reaching a volume of 87.2 MT compared to 91 MT a year earlier. By flow, the volume of imported goods amounted to 52.2 MT (+2.4%).
“The positive trend of imports is explained on the one hand by the increase in traffic of cereals (+23.2%) and hydrocarbons (+10%), and on the other hand by the drop in the imports of sulfur (- 8.4%), sulfuric acid (-39.8%) and steel products (-18.1%),” the report points out.
By value, goods imports increased by 39.6%, amounting to more than 737.72 billion dirhams in 2022 compared to 528.57 billion dirhams in 2021.
As for exports, the volume of goods reached 27 MT, down 18.5%, manly due the decline in foreign sales of phosphates (-42.7%), fertilizers (-16.6%) and phosphoric acid (-29. 3%).
“Excluding phosphate products, exports increased by 10.1%, with an additional volume of 885,903 tonnes, explained by the increase in the traffic of salt (+418.3%) and clinker (+30.2%)”, the report notes, adding that by value, exports amounted to more than 456.10 billion dirhams in 2022 (+29.4%).
