British energy company Chariot has obtained the Environmental Impact Assessment approval for the Anchois field,  one of the most important natural gas exploration fields that has important exploitation potential that may become a reality within the next few years.

The company said in a press release this week that it had obtained this approval from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development. This represents an important step in developing the gas extraction project from the coast of Laarache.

The approval is valid for five years and covers all aspects of development, including future wells and marine infrastructure, and a project to connect to the “European Maghreb” pipeline, which previously transported Algerian gas to Spain via Morocco.

The Environmental Impact Assessment process is a procedure that is used regarding any project and allows its owners to pass to the actual implementation stage. The evaluation process for the “Anchoa” project lasted 12 months and included environmental and social studies that included four concerned regions.

According to Chariot company data, the potential of this field is estimated at about one billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, and if this is achieved, it will cover the entire annual needs of the Kingdom within the coming years.

Morocco currently produces natural gas from small fields with a total of 100 million cubic meters per year, and imports about 900 million cubic meters from abroad to meet domestic demand estimated at one billion cubic meters annually, according to the latest data issued by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.

The Chariot Country Director indicated that the coming year will be decisive regarding the development of the gas field project. “We will continue to work with our partner, the NIn December 2022, “Chariot” had signed an agreement with the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Minerals on the basis of selling its prospective production to the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water at a rate of 600 million cubic meters per year for a period of not less than 10 years.
