The United Nations Security Council decided on Monday to extend the mandate of the MINURSO mission for a year.

The text of Resolution No. 2703, drafted by the United States of America states that the Security Council “decided to extend the mandate of the MINURSO mission until October 31, 2024.”

The resolution was adopted with 13 countries voting in favor, while two abstained from voting.

In this new resolution, the United Nations Executive Body reiterated its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented by Morocco in 2007, as a serious and credible basis that would put an end to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, as stipulated in Security Council resolutions.

Council members also renewed their support for the efforts of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and his personal envoy to the Western Sahara, aimed at advancing the political process with the horizon of reaching a realistic, practical and lasting solution based on consensus.
