Morocco was the only African nation to make it into the top 50 list of the Global Remote Work Index (GRWI), which assessed the potential of 108 nations to become top locations for remote workers.

This index evaluates four key areas: infrastructure, economics, cybersecurity, and, as of this year, a new factor called social safety criteria that ensures the caliber of remote labor.

Morocco, which ranks 48th worldwide and is first among African nations, stands out in particular for its inexpensive cost of living and cyber safety. Despite lacking in physical and digital infrastructure, it is a desirable alternative because of its popularity with tourists and low cost of living.

In terms of global cyber safety, Morocco claimed the 19 spot. However, in terms of economic safety, it was placed 57 in a list of 108 countries.

Morocco’s digital and physical infrastructure placed it 72 on the list, and in social safety, it’s positioned 88.

The index, created by NordLayer, unveiled that Morocco and Tunisia are the best countries in Africa for remote work followed by Mauritius, South Africa, and Egypt.

The top ten African countries list is completed by Ghana, Zambia, Botswana, Nigeria, and Algeria.

Globally, Morocco ranked 48, with Tunisia following closely behind on the 53 spot, and Mauritius standing on the 58 spot.

Most African nations are ranked lower on the list. Angola is at the bottom, ranking 108th out of all the nations assessed. Mozambique is ranked 107th, and Zimbabwe 106. These nations’ weak rankings are mostly attributable to their inadequate physical and digital infrastructures.

The key finding of the paper is that the northern areas of Europe dominate the top 10 GRWI 2023 rankings, with Germany, Spain, and Portugal taking the third through sixth positions. In addition, with the exception of Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the majority of the countries in the top half are from Europe.

The cost of living is typically higher in the top-ranking nations in the global GRWI. However, Portugal, which ranks sixth overall and 56th in terms of cost of living, has the closest distance between these two factors and provides the finest opportunity in terms of value for money among the top 10.

The GRWI ranking’s findings on the relationship between cyber safety and social safety dimensions clearly show that these two factors are the most important indicators of a great remote work experience.
