Morocco ranked third among the top 10 African countries with the biggest investment in the hotel business, following Egypt and Nigeria, showed a report by the W-Hospitality group.
The report featured on Business Insider, was put together using the data on signed deals in early 2023 from 45 regional (African) and international hotel chains.
It provides consistent, reliable, and comparable information on the pipeline activities of hotel chains operating in Africa and those seeking to establish themselves on the continent.
It covers 54 countries in Africa, including those in North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Indian Ocean Islands.
First on the list is Egypt followed by Nigeria, and Morocco on the third spot.
Ethiopia comes fourth, followed by Kenya, Cape Verde, Algeria, South Africa, Senegal, and finally Cote d’Ivoire.
Egypt, standing top on the list, has 103 hotels, while Nigeria has 42 and Morocco has 46.
Ethiopia disposes of 33 according to this 2023 list, Kenya has 25, Cape Verde has 14, and Algeria has 15. South Africa has 21 hotels, Seenegal 15 and finally Cote d’Ivoire 16.
Whether or not construction has started, these statistics show the status of deals by region.
Given the significant number of recent signings in North Africa, particularly in Morocco and Egypt, and the fact that more of these projects are in sub-Saharan Africa than in North Africa, said figures have largely remained steady for a year.
According to the report, “the hotel chains have deals signed in 42 countries in Africa. West Africa leads with 13 countries (out of a total of 18), followed by the Southern & Indian Ocean sub-region where there are 11 countries with pipeline development activity. Central Africa has seen increased activity, now with deals in five of the eight countries in the sub-region, Gabon and Chad joining the group this year.”
