Only a fifth of the French population is planning to donate to Moroccans impacted by the Al Haouz earthquake, the lowest percentage of donations in France to earthquake victims in recorded history.

Only 22% of French people said they would send money to help earthquake victims in Morocco, revealed the latest IFOP Institute poll for the French newspaper L’Express.

Meanwhile, 78% of French respondents said they would not donate to the Al Haouz earthquake victims.

56% of donors or supposed contributors agreed that “pictures that showed the extent of the losses caused by the earthquake” were the motive behind their donation.

18% said that “the desire to get closer to Morocco and stand by Moroccans” is what motivates their act of solidarity. 26% of the respondents acknowledged that their willingness to give was in reaction to appeals made by French and international charitable groups.

The highest percentage of French citizens who have donated to or plan to donate to affected Moroccans are left-wing party supporters (35%), followed by right-wing party supporters (28%).
