In response to a viral video on social media depicting the decrepit condition of the dormitories of Ben Youssef High School for Traditional Education, the Education Minister visited the premises, and confirmed that the dormitories, used as an accommodation to the victims of Al Haouz quake, are in need of repairs.
During this visit, the Minister engaged with the students, listening to their concerns and addressing their issues.
The visit comes after a student shared a video documenting the rundown condition of the dormitories. The video shows broken glass window panels, empty, worn-out lockers and shabby, uncovered beds.
In an impassioned voice filled with disbelief and exasperation, the female student said “look at where they brought us. I wish they would have left us where we were, we were better off there.”
With her voice on the verge of tears, the student said “when we first arrived, there was no electricity. They only installed it after we had asked them to.”
“They don’t even give us blankets,” the student added, “who would accept living in such conditions?”
Ending her video with a bathroom tour, the student said “there is no water here, and no showerhead. How are we supposed to spend the entire year in this place? there are students who have nowhere to go.”
Following his inspection visit, the Minister announced a series of urgent measures to improve the living conditions for students in this facility, with the primary objective of ensuring their well-being and safety.
The steps include the transfer of the 230 female students currently residing in these accommodations to the “Dar Al-Taliba – Dar Sraghna” dormitory in Marrakech, scheduled for Friday, September 22, 2023.
As of Thursday, September 21, the company responsible for providing cafeteria services will be replaced.
Urgent renovations for the dormitories will begin on the same day, focusing on areas such as carpentry, plumbing, the installation of glass panels, and sanitary facilities. Individual lockers will be provided for students immediately.
To offer comprehensive support, social and psychological counselors will be present and actively involved in this facility to help and guide the students during this transitional period.
