Fake news has been spreading online through images of destroyed homes and damaged structures that were allegedly part of a rural commune in the Ifrane area.
Instead, the circulating images depicted the community of Imi Nolawn.
Imi Nolawn is a rural commune in the Drâa-Tafilalet district of the province of Ouarzazate. According to the general population and housing census for the year 2014, the commune housed 21,059 inhabitants.
Ifrane residents, on the other hand, told Hespress EN that they haven’t experienced any repercussions from the earthquake or any damage to their city.
Four locals told our reporters, “We’re fortunate not to have seen any significant negative effects of the earthquake on our buildings, homes, and people.
The quake’s death toll in Morocco does not include any fatalities in the Ifrane region.
However, other locals spoke of the traumatic and psychological effects the earthquake had on them, which at times calls for support and help.
According to an updated death toll, the Moroccan government said that as of 7 p.m. 2862 people have died, 2854 of whom were buried. The number of wounded has reached 2562 as of the same time.
International seismic observatories noted a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred in various parts of Morocco on Friday night.
Residents of Marrakesh, Agadir, and Rabat, as well as those in the other Moroccan cities, particularly felt the severe tremor.
