iPhone 15 to require a USB-C charging cable instead of the current Apple Lightning cord

In what will be Apple’s first change to the iPhone’s charging port in more than 10 years, the newest iPhone, iPhone 15, will require a USB-C cable instead of what’s currently used on existing iPhones, the lightning wire.

Ever since 2020, the multimillion-dollar technology company has been under pressure from the European Union to change its charging port to a USB-C.

A law requiring universal charging ports on all cell phones sold in the EU was approved in 2022, and it will go into effect in the fall of 2024. Apple already charges its most recent iPad and Macbook models using USB-C cords.

According to media reports, Apple indeed plans to switch to USB-C for charging iPhones globally.

Bloomberg claims that the updated AirPods are also affected by the charging adjustment. Instead of a Lightning port, the new AirPods Pro will also have a USB-C charging port.

This subject came to the surface as the release of the iPhone 15 came near.

The iPhone 15, which will be unveiled on September 12, is anticipated to arrive in four variations and signal Apple’s switch to the USB-C standard for charging smartphones.

This year, the iPhone 15 lineup is anticipated to have four versions: two regular models, most likely referred to as the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, and two “higher-end models,” according to Mark Gurman, chief tech writer for Bloomberg.

Tim Long, an analyst at Barclays, states in an investment note first reported by MacRumors and cited by numerous tech and financial publications that although the standard iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus are not anticipated to see year-over-year price increases, the two higher-end models are likely to see price increases relative to their iPhone 14 series predecessors.

The starting price for the iPhone 15 Pro is anticipated to rise by $100 to $1,099 in exchange for a more robust titanium design with smaller bezels, while the model that may be called the iPhone 15 Pro Max could increase in price by as much as $200, with a projected starting price of $1,119 or $1,299, according to Long.
