Fire intervention teams are still working to put out a large fire that started in the Jbel Laqraa forest in the Taounate province on Tuesday afternoon.
“The fire outbreak in Taounate damaged 14 hectares of forest cover, including conifer trees, green oaks, and secondary forest formations,” said Yassine El Aidi, Acting Regional Director of the National Agency for Water and Forests in Taounate.
The local government, the Royal Gendarmerie, the auxiliary troops and the local community made up the intervention teams on the ground.
The development of vegetation that is prone to rapid burning, challenging terrain, and gusty winds, among other factors, all contributed to the fire’s growth and made it more difficult to put out, according to El Aidi.
Two Royal Air Forces Canadair aircraft were employed by the intervention team. They flew 14 sorties into the fire’s hotspots.
Local residents are currently in a state of intense anticipation as a result of their worry that the fire may spread to their homes, particularly those living near the Bouknala roundabout in the community of Ain Mediouna.
