The Royal Moroccan Navy will receive the Avante 1800 maritime patrol vessel in the coming years, reported  Infodefensa.

Spanish shipbuilding company Navantia, focused on producing ships and military boats, has begun developing the Moroccan maritime patrol vessel project.

The ship Avante 1800 will be delivered to Morocco in the middle of 2026 in accordance with Morocco’s naval fleet expansion.

The 87-meter-long,13-meter-wide Avante 1800 maritime patrol ship can travel at a top speed of roughly 24 nautical knots. The ship is being constructed in the San Fernando shipyards in Cadiz, according to Info Defensa.

The ship is powered by five MAN 175-D marine generator sets with four primary engines and a common BAUDOUIN-6 propulsion system.

The Avante 1800 maritime patrol ship can carry PDMS missile system and missile launchers SSM and SAM, in addition to the main gun of 57 or 75 mm caliber and two secondary guns of 25 or 30 mm.

The Avante 1800 is the first warship built for Morocco in Spanish shipyards in forty years. The Rahmani ship, which is still in use by the Royal Moroccan Navy, was given to Morocco in 1983.

Morocco is attempting to acquire this warship to cover the maritime military shortage, at a time when its military is primarily focused on improving its air and ground capabilities .

Morocco’s naval fleet consists of the military frigate Mohamed VI, which joined the Moroccan army in 2013, as well as three other Damen-built frigates, two Florial-model corvettes, and a handful of maritime patrol boats.

Morocco was ranked 25th among the most powerful naval fleets in the world and second at the Maghreb level, according to the WISE VOTER website in August 2023.
