Libyan Abdelhakim Shelmani has been elected to the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Executive Committee (Comex) in Abidjan on Thursday, July 13.
Algeria suffered a setback at the CAF’s Ordinary General Assembly, as its candidate, Djahid Zefizef, President of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), lost the seat.
Algeria’s candidacy received just 15 votes against 38 for Libya, who is standing for a second term from 2023-2027.
Algerian media had accused the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Fouzi Lekjaa, of supporting the candidacy of the Libyan Shelmani, who is also President of the North African Football Union.
A few hours before the vote began, an Algerian media outlet even announced Djahid Zefizef’s victory.
Morocco and Algeria are in the running to host CAN 2025. The verdict is expected in the coming weeks.
