The Medusa Submarine Cable System construction contract has entered into force, according to an announcement from Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), Elettra Tlc, and Orange Morocco.
The construction contract heralds the beginning of a large-scale project that will increase connectivity by more than 8,700 kilometers, making it the longest cable in the Mediterranean Sea.
Medusa will forge significant ties between Morocco, Portugal, Spain, France, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt.
The European Union cofounded the Medusa submarine cable project, which connects France and Tunisia Under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) initiative.
Orange Morocco has also chosen to invest in the underwater cable infrastructure in the Nador Region to increase Morocco’s capacity for digital exchanges in Africa and its digital sovereignty.
“We are incredibly appreciative of everyone that helped Medusa.” Norman Albi, CEO of Medusa, expressed gratitude for the assistance of key businesses in North Africa, including ASN, Elettra TLC, Orange, and AFR-IX Telecom.
The Medusa system is using cutting-edge 24-pair fiber optic Open Cable technology with a minimum capacity of 20Tb/s, to accommodate the region’s growing need for broadband.
Elettra Tlc will start survey operations as soon as possible, and equipment fabrication and installation are scheduled to take place between 2024 and 2025. Landing facilities will be offered by Orange in France, Tunisia, and Morocco.
The Medusa undersea cable system will open up an unimaginable potential for cooperation, innovation, and economic growth.
This partnership demonstrates the dedication of influential firms and governmental institutions to fostering the future connectivity and prosperity of the Mediterranean area.
“We are delighted to be in charge of the marine survey and installation for the first phase of the MEDUSA project”, said Aurélien Vigano, Orange’s vice president of international transmission networks, “we are thrilled to contribute to the development of this future telecommunications backbone of the Mediterranean Sea.”
