Head of Spain's Popular Party aims to restore stable, balanced relations with Morocco

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, president of Spain’s Popular Party (PP), said on Monday that his first priority if he takes over the Moncloa Palace will be to establish an “excellent” relationship with Morocco, characterized by stability and transparency, as a “neighbor, ally and friend”.

In an interview with Telecinco, the PP leader said, in response to questions about Spain’s relations with Morocco, that “the first thing we will do is to send a message to Morocco, as I already did in my first meeting with the Moroccan head of government, to tell them that we are a reliable party, a party of state.

In this sense, Feijóo maintained that relations between the two Kingdoms cannot be based on the personal relationship of the “incumbent president with King Mohammed VI, because they are not stable.”

The hopeful candidat defended the need to establish a solid link with an “ally, neighbor and friend” of Spain, while seeking to find out about the agreements signed by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, with Morocco.

Feijóo insisted that the PP is a “reliable and state party” and, therefore, “matters of state must be brought before the Cortes Generales”. “I am interested in a stable relationship with the Kingdom of Morocco, because it is my ally, my neighbor and my friend. For this, we need to know what Sánchez has pacted with Morocco and first restore transparency to the agreements, then obtain the approval of Congress and the Senate” he added.

However, the PP president did not just talk about maintaining ties with Morocco. Feijóo also stressed the importance of re-establishing “balanced relations” with Algeria, the “Saharawi people” and the UN, just as all previous Spanish presidents had done until “the current failure of the President of the Government when, in March 2022, he described the Moroccan autonomy proposal for the Sahara as the most serious, credible and realistic”.

“I am committed to guaranteeing the stability of our relations, transparency, loyalty and balance. I believe this is what Morocco can expect from us”. said the PP president in the interview.
