As one of Australia’s most sought-after tattoo artists, Sophia Baughan travels frequently and depends on her travels for inspiration.
She recently visited Morocco, motivated by her admiration for Moroccan Amazigh tattoos, to look for artists who are preserving these customs.
As read on Escape media, the tattoo artist loves Chefchaouen and was obsessed with the clean lines, bright colors, and rough textures featured through the city’s details.
“You’re guaranteed to fill your artist cup. It’s thrilling walking around a town like that, the way the people and animals who live in it contrast off the background,” said Baughan.
The artist’s visit compensated more than a pursuit of inspiration. She visited Morocco during the holy month of Ramadan. “The call to prayer was lovely,” she highlighted.
Baughan highlighted the Moroccan people’s hospitality.
“We found a homestay on Airbnb. We hiked to Akchour in the Rif Mountains, picking fresh figs on the way and swimming in the most pristine water holes and waterfalls. It was the most untouched and beautiful paradise,” explained Sophia Baughan.
In Fes, the tattoo artist was drawn to the architecture, saying that it was like walking through a scene of Game of Thrones.
“We visited a lot of mosques, palaces, and riads. My favorite is Dar Batha, a gorgeous old palace turned museum with Andalusian gardens. We stayed in an insanely special five-star hotel, Riad Fès, with old architecture and patterned tilework,” she added.
