Meta has announced its plan to block access to news content on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada, once a new legislation requiring internet tech companies to pay news publishers takes effect.
The move comes in response to complaints from Canada’s media industry, which seeks tighter regulation of tech companies to prevent them from dominating the online advertising market.
Meta had previously expressed its stance that news has no economic value for the company and that users do not primarily utilize the platform for news consumption.
The legislation, similar to a law that was previously passed in Australia, aims to enforce negotiations and payment between platforms like Facebook and Google and news publishers.
Both Google and Facebook had previously threatened to limit their services in Australia but eventually reached agreements with media companies after amendments were made to the law.
