88.05% of Moroccan bathing waters meet microbiological quality norms, according to the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development in its bathing water report for 2023.
49 monitoring sites dispersed across 27 beaches—or 11.95% of all Moroccan bathing waters—have been deemed non-compliant.
The influence of waste water discharges, a large concentration of bathers, a lack of hygienic infrastructure, and climate change all contribute to the unsuitability of these beaches for swimming.
On the other hand, since 2018, the percentage of Moroccan beaches’ bathing water that meets microbiological quality standards has remained steady. This year, the rate of good beaches is 36.59%.
