Morocco has extradited a notorious fugitive to the United Kingdom. Nana Oppong, a 43-year-old resident of Newham, London, was wanted by Essex police for the murder of 50-year-old Robert Powell.

Powell was tragically shot eight times with a 9mm pistol outside a party in Water Lane, Roydon, Harlow, in June 2020.

According to the British National Crime Agency, Oppong, who was apprehended by Moroccan police in September 2022 in Tangiers while attempting to enter the country with forged documents, was also sought by the London Metropolitan Police Service.

The London police had been investigating his alleged involvement in conspiracy, possession of firearms with the intent to endanger lives, conspiracy to supply cocaine, and money laundering, particularly related to his alleged use of the encrypted messaging platform Encrochat.

Superintendent Detective Stephen Jennings, leading the Essex Police investigation, expressed satisfaction with Oppong’s arrest and extradition, attributing it to the excellent collaboration between Essex Police and international law enforcement agencies.

He emphasized their dedication to seeking justice for Robert’s family and all those affected by violent crimes. Jennings declared their unwavering commitment to locating every suspect, questioning them thoroughly, and ensuring they face the full consequences of their actions in court.

UK Ambassador to Morocco, Simon Martin, acknowledged the fruitful partnership between the UK and Morocco in combating serious organized crime. He regarded Oppong’s extradition as a tangible outcome of this collaborative effort and expressed gratitude for the cooperation extended by their Moroccan counterparts.

On Tuesday, June 20, a team from the Joint International Crime Center (NCA) accompanied Oppong to the United Kingdom for extradition. He appeared before Chelmsford Magistrates Court and has been remanded in custody. His next hearing is scheduled at Chelmsford Crown Court this afternoon.
