The Moroccan authorities are reportedly carrying out an investigation on two Spanish employees of the Consulate General in Tangier, and two Moroccan intermediaries under suspicions of their involvement in a Schengen visa fraud.
According to Schengen Visa Info, the Moroccan police declared that the Spanish Consulate employees, as well as the intermediaries, have been helping certain applicants in obtaining forged visas through illegal ways in exchange for money.
The authorities stated that the four people involved in the visa scam assisted Moroccans in obtaining a Schengen visa to Spain in exchange for €15,000.
The same source also clarified that the questioned visas were short-stay visas, indicating that all holders of a Schengen visa were permitted to remain in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days.
They did not mention whether individuals who obtained the visa decided to remain in the country illegally or chose to return to Morocco.
The intermediaries handled all the paperwork needed to get a visa, according to the Moroccan police, who also claimed that they fabricated all other documents, including work contracts and bank records.
The police explained that once they obtained the necessary paperwork from the intermediaries they collaborated with, the staff members at the Spanish Consulate General in Tangier assisted in the issuing of visas.
The Moroccan officials stated, according to the same source, that it is yet unknown how many fake visas have been given because the investigation is still ongoing. On the other hand, it’s believed the number is “quite considerable”.
