Journalists rally behind Abdessamad Nasser after controversial termination by Al Jazeera
Thursday 1 June 2023 - 16:35

Esteemed journalist Abdessamad Nasser has been abruptly ousted from his position in a unilateral decision that prompted widespread concern and a flurry of criticism.

The National Syndicate of Moroccan Press has swiftly voiced its unequivocal backing, and said that after an extensive investigation, it found Nasser’s dissmisal followed a tweet the journalist published in the defense of Moroccan women who were disrespected by official Algerian media. The Algerian acomments claimed that the Moroccan state was tampering with Moroccan women’s honor.

Al Jazeera administration asked that Nasser take down the tweet, but he resisted in the spirit of free speech.

In response to Nasser’s tweet, the administration of Al Jazeera demanded that he remove or modify the post.

A subsequent meeting ensued between Nasser and the channel’s general manager, wherein a resolute ultimatum was delivered: either delete or alter the tweet, or face dire administrative consequences.

Nasser stressed that he would not comply with the request and emphasized that the tweet had nothing to do with the Qatari station.

“Shortly after the meeting, the management of Al Jazeera channel announced its choice to unilaterally end its contract with Nasser who exercised his natural freedom to voice his views outside the confines of the media.” The syndicate said.

The National Syndicate of Moroccan Press issued a statement vehemently denouncing this unjust decision.

The National Syndicate of Moroccan Press stated that “some journalists working in the same channel and in affiliated sports channels abused the Moroccan state and its institutions frequently and repeatedly, including the royal institution of the kingdom.”

The syndicate claims that “despite the commotion that followed that, the administration of the Qatari Al Jazeera channel did not respond or take action.”

The National Syndicate of Moroccan Press revealed that the Algerian Embassy in Doha had intervened and put pressure on the channel and the media content it produces to impose a certain orientation unfavorable to Morocco’s interests.

The General Union of Arab Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists will also receive a protest letter from the National Syndicate of Moroccan Press, which will also be sent to the channel and its Center for Press Freedom.

The national syndicate also announced plans to hold a protest soon in front of Al Jazeera’s office in Rabat. It also exhorts all Al-Jazeera journalists to publicly show their support for Nasser, who was unlawfully fired for exercising his right to free speech.

The National Syndicate of Moroccan Press believes that the decision to eject someone arbitrarily damages Al Jazeera’s reputation and deflates its claims to uphold journalistic independence and freedom of expression.
