Over the past few hours, social media platforms overflowed with pictures and videos of famous Moroccan artists wearing all kinds of caftan, all of which were tagged #MoroccanCaftan in a campaign promoting the Moroccan heritage.

Against the cultural appropriation of the Moroccan traditional women’s wear, female artists fought by shining in gorgeous looks of the caftan, highlighting its authentic beauty and expressing their attachment to their Moroccan identity.

Moroccan comedian Meryam Kadmiri had shared pictures of herself wearing the Moroccan “takchita”, thanking Moroccan ancestors for leaving us with such a splendid and valuable heritage.

The Moroccan singer Rokaya Magha also hopped on the trend, with a caption that said “Moroccans will defend their country’s culture and history to the last breath.”

Moroccan jewelry designer and fashion blogger, Miryam Labiad, joined in the aforementioned campaign, stating that she had adored the Moroccan caftan from a tender age, “The traditional Moroccan women’s wear is one of the oldest traditional clothes in the world, having appeared in the twelfth century during the Almohad Caliphate era.”

On the same note, a national consultation was held last February on the theme “art, tradition, and know-how of the caftan”, to nominate the Moroccan caftan for the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

Abdelilah Afifi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, said that ever since the caftan was included in the tangible and intangible heritage list of ISESCO in 2022, all stakeholders had been invested in preserving and promoting the kingdom’s rich cultural heritage, including the caftan, which is considered a national cultural and aesthetic element.
