After wining in a category of the Sony World Photography Awards with a synthetic image he had created using the AI system DALL-E 2, photographer Boris Eldagsen recently sparked controversy after declining to accept the award.
Eldagsen stated that his intention was not to deceive, as he turned down the award during the ceremony because he thought the organizers were omitting to mention that the image was artificial.
As read in The Art Newspaper, his goal has always been to spark discussion about how artificial intelligence technologies have changed the world’s perception of photography.
The photographer made his stance clear, contending that these manufactured images are not photographs and should not be permitted in photography contests.
Eldagsen made the distinction between artificial intelligence images and photographs in a later interview with the BBC, referring to them as “promptography” as opposed to “photography” and noting that real photographs are made when light reacts with a sensitive surface, whereas these images are produced by prompts fed into a neural network.
