Following reports of armed fighting in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, on Saturday, The UN Secretary-General called for ‘immediate’ cessation of ‘hostilities’ in Sudan and a return to dialogue to solve the current crisis.

“The Secretary-General calls on the leaders of the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces to immediately cease hostilities, restore calm and initiate a dialogue to resolve the current crisis”, Mr. Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson said in a press release.

Any further escalation in the fighting will have a devastating impact on civilians and further aggravate the already precarious humanitarian situation in the country, he warned.

The UN chiefs called on Member States in the region to support efforts to restore order and return to the path of transition.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the United Nations to support the people of Sudan in their efforts to restore a democratic transition and realize their aspirations for building a peaceful and secure future.

Clashes erupted between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in many parts of the capital Khartoum and other areas outside the capital, on Saturday morning.

According to media reports, the RSF claimed that it had taken control of Khartoum international airport, Merowe airport, al-Obeid airport and the presidential palace.
