Two former teachers in Kanye West’s cult-like catholic school “Donda” are suing the rapper for alleged violations as well as restrictive and unusual school rules for both teachers and students.
According to Buzzfeed News, the lawsuit alleges, among other things, that the kids were only permitted to eat sushi, that the school had no janitorial services, and that West would not allow staff or students to wear jewelry.
The teachers further claim that the school failed to comply with Department of Education criteria and state rules and that teachers were not obliged to obtain Basic Life Support certification or mandated reporting training, explained the same source.
Third-grade teacher Cecilia Hailey and fifth-grade teacher Chekarey Byers, who both worked at Donda Academy from January to March 2023, filed the case on Thursday.
According to the lawsuit, Hailey and Byers were fired from Donda Academy on March 3, 2023, without explanation, citing a violation of the state’s labor legislation. They believe they were fired as a result of their complaints to the school management.
The Donda Academy, named after the rapper’ late mother, promotes itself as a ‘reflection of God’s glory in the world.’
The school teaches arts, math, and science. “Students must be confident in forming ideas,” says the academy’s official page.
According to Rolling Stone magazine, tuition fees at the Donda Academy cost $15,000 a year.
