The spiritual leader Dalai Lama sparked controversy in a viral video, in which he kisses a child on the lip and asks him to suck his tongue. Through his Twitter account, he has apologized to the child and to his family.

The apology published was written by his representatives, saying that “A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug. His Holiness wishes to apologize to the boy and his family as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused.”

Internet users on several platforms called his behavior inappropriate, as the video continues to spread causing further criticism.

The Twitter apology went on, stating that “His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident.”

The video in question showed the Dalai Lama pulling the child by grabbing his chin, then giving him a kiss on the lips, which was then followed by the spiritual leader sticking out his tongue and asking the child to suck his tongue.

The boy withdrew a little bit in what seemed to be a very uncomfortable reaction.

This 14 Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, lives as a refugee in India, still maintaining the title of Tibet’s most important spiritual leader.
