Moroccan player Yassine Bounou known as ‘Bono’ lost the best goalkeeper title to the Argentian player Emiliano Martinez at “The Best” awards of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).
Bounou, Thibaut Courtois, and Emiliano Martinez were the three finalists in The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper category out of 12 candidates.
This was voted on by national team coaches and captains, as well as journalists and fans.
Martinez was a member of the winning team that led Argentina to the world cup finals in Qatar.
As for Courtois, his 2022 came to a disappointing end as Belgium was knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage.
Nonetheless, he has already received The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper Award, having done so in 2018.
Bounou reached the top three because he played a crucial role in Morocco’s historic run at the FIFA World Cup, making it to the semi-finals.
The 31-year-old sparkled as his team shocked Portugal 1-0 in the quarterfinals and made two outstanding penalty saves in Morocco’s victorious game against Spain.
According to FIFA’s official website, Morocco’s captain Romain Saiss called the tall goalkeeper’s World Cup efforts “heroic.”
The Atlas Lion Bounou was one of the seven goalkeepers named by FIFA as the top seven in the world in December.
“A calm and assured presence as the last line of defense for club and nation,” the football organization praised the goalie.
