Morocco votes in favor of UN resolution calling for Russia’s withdrawal from Ukraine

Morocco voted in favor of a UN resolution calling on Moscow to withdraw its forces from Ukraine and achieve comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Kiev.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) once again condemned Russia for its war against Ukraine, and called on Moscow to immediately withdraw and end the fighting.

A year after the launch of the special military operation in Ukraine, as called by Russian President Vladimir Putin, 141 countries supported the resolution calling for  “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine.

32 countries, including Algeria abstained from voting, while seven countries voted against the resolution, including Russia.

Algeria’s abstention is the second similar stance from its representation in the UN, since the body adopted a resolution calling on Russia to “immediately stop using force against Ukraine.”

Morocco maintains its call for all member states to adhere to the principle of “non-recourse to force” in settling disputes between states, to intensify dialogue and negotiation between the parties, and to encourage all peaceful initiatives.

Morocco had abstained from voting and was absent from the extraordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly in March 2022, which ended with a vote on a resolution condemning the Russian war on Ukraine.

Before the armed conflict between the two neighboring European countries, Moroccan-Russian relations were never stable, until after King Mohammed VI’s 2016 visit to Moscow, his meeting with President Vladimir Putin, and their signing of strategic agreements.

In October 2017, Rabat and Moscow signed 11 agreements, three of them in the fields of energy, industry and agriculture. The volume of trade exchange between the two countries increased from about $200 million in 2001 to $2.5 billion in 2016.

In 2016, Russia ranked ninth in the list of countries exporting to Morocco, and the 22nd in the list of importers from Morocco. Morocco and the two conflicting parties have important economic relations, especially in the fields of trade of agricultural materials, which makes the balance of interests a decisive factor in presenting any public position on the current war.

Morocco noted, in regards to the conflict, that it is following the crisis between the two parties with concern and clinging to the territorial integrity of all the countries of the United Nations.

Western countries adopted a new package of sanctions against Moscow in response to its attack against Ukraine, but trade between Morocco and Russia continues, despite a decrease in the amount of Morocco’s imports from the country.
